Whether this is your first baby or your forth, you have an idea of what you’d like your birthing experience to be like. Some people are very detailed and have recorded specific music to be played, are planning to use the tub or a pool, and most women will know prior to labor if they want a medicated delivery or not. What many parents don’t have, especially first time parents, is that the most important thing that you should have going into labor is an open mind.
Babies have a mind of their own, just like the mom, and more often than not these minds take over for the body and things don’t go as planned. Instead of being new parents that are disappointed in how the birthing process went, keeping an open mind will ensure that the new parents stay in good frame of mind and are happy with the birth of their new baby.
There are so many things that could happen during the birth of a baby that is not anticipated by the new parents with the birthing plan. For example, a mom that stated in her plan that she wanted to avoid any medication may end up requesting an epidural. There is no shame in this. Or, perhaps the opposite will happen and a mom that really wants an epidural ends up not being able to have one. One of the biggest things that happen to disrupt a birthing plan is when a c-section is needed after the parents expected to have a natural delivery. This doesn’t make the birth experience any less of an experience. It is important to let these kinds of situations just happen, go with the flow, and you will have a calmer and happier birthing experience.
Keeping an open mind will prevent unnecessary stress both during labor and delivery and afterwards. A birth typically never goes as planned and it’s important to realize that your birthing plan is just a list of your wishes and desires and that each and every single thing in your plan may not happen.
